About Us

Who we are

inset-tubaclassThe California Music Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation that provides services designed to strengthen music education and increase the number of future music educators in California's public school system. While being led operationally by educators, we are governed by a combination of education and business leadership. This model enables us to set the right priorities with the right governance practices, and practice responsible stewardship with the funding we receive. We believe that a stronger role for music in the public school curriculum, with more and better trained music teachers, works to create and sustain the development of stronger students, citizens, and communities.

With these goals, CMP has designed a model that successfully addresses both the development of music teachers and the improvement of existing music programs. Our fellowships place promising undergraduates studying music education at California universities into urban K-12 public schools (principally Title 1 schools). There, each young teacher-in-training receives real classroom experience and the mentoring of an exceptional, seasoned music educator. This gives CMP fellows "the much needed time to develop their music teaching strategies and pedagogical skills", says Executive Director Steve Venz. In turn, this quality and rigorous education means that "students become disciplined, team-oriented problem solvers who are confident and able to think creatively".

Our Leadership

The California Music Project has attracted the generous support of a distinguished Board and Advisory Board representing the best in California music, education, arts, business and personal integrity. Thank you for your energy, counsel and continued support.
